Distract Yourself From Your Phone

Image From Pixabay
Today’s fast paced society can be draining. Being on the go all the time can make you forget the time before you were busy nonstop. With our faces constantly buried in our phones, tablets and laptops both at work and at home, it can distract us from the real world. Even though our phones are great connectors and open up a whole new world to us, sometimes there’s nothing that beats good old face-to-face communication and alone time. In honor of the Day of Unplugging, take a day or even just a few hours to unplug from your electronics and live in the moment.

Now that the weather has been a little kinder to us, it’s almost okay to spend tons of time outside again. Luckily, at The Louis, we have a fabulous BBQ picnic area. So even if the weather is still a little chilly, you can still hang out near the picnic area and grill up some burgers. Relaxing in the picnic area with your pals is a great way to be social without having to be attached to your phone. If all of your friends are already with you, you don’t need to stare at your phone! Hopefully, spring will be here soon so we can start to use the picnic area regularly!

One of the best ways to avoid the draw of your phone is to occupy yourself. Strike out into the city for an event! If you’re enjoying yourself and keeping busy, you’ll forget all about your phone and enjoy yourself even further. This month is the famous National Cherry Blossom Festival. This three week event from March to April is the perfect time to enjoy the scenery and stop staring at your favorite screen.

Another great way to remove yourself from the burden of technology is to take yourself outdoors! Spending time outdoors is never a waste of time. There are tons of lovely local parks in Washington DC to enjoy. The Yards Park has everything you need to distract you from your electronics. This new park features water areas, kayaking and a summer concert series. However, when going to the concert make sure you watch through your eyes instead of through your phone.

Enjoy your Day of Unplugging with some distractions to keep your mind off of the fact that your phone isn’t in front of your face.

A Very Bike-Friendly Louis

If it seems like there are more cyclists than ever on D.C. streets, that's because there is, especially if you live at The Louis! According to a new study from real estate company Redfin, U Street is the most bike-friendly neighborhood in Washington D.C., with the neighboring Logan Circle neighborhood coming in at #2! What qualifies our area as "bike-friendly," and how can you start living a more bike-friendly life both at The Louis and beyond? Let us tell you!

What makes a neighborhood bike-friendly? Investments in trails, bike lanes and other aspects of biking infrastructure is the first step. If the weather is nice and we don't have to wait for the Metro or sit in traffic, wouldn't you rather enjoy the fresh air and exercise? While biking to work may be good for your health, it is also good for building businesses. According to Greg Billing, the executive director of the Washington Area Bicyclists Association (to Washington Business Journal), creating a cycling culture builds up a neighborhood's eco-system. Businesses and residences will be drawn to areas where there is more foot and/or bike traffic.

If you are interested incorporating more biking into your daily routine, there are some important things to know before you hit the streets. For example, you may want to ride with a local group first before venturing on to the streets by yourself. It's also important to make sure your bike is in proper riding condition, or that you purchase a new lightweight bike for your commute. You may even want to take a class or urban bike riding. Especially in a city like D.C., with such a high volume of drivers, you will want your commute to be as safe and easy as possible! For example, be sure you ride in the same direction as the traffic flow, give yourself a 3 foot cushion from parked cars, and yield to pedestrians. To view more rules on urban cycling or to request a workbook, click here.

Consider changing up your daily commute by incorporating cycling into your routine, especially since we reside in the District's most bike-friendly neighborhood! Do you regularly ride a bike to work? What tips do you have for new riders? Share your thoughts on The Louis' Facebook and Twitter pages!

Our 14th & U Restaurant Tour

Regardless of whether or not you consider yourself a "foodie," anyone can appreciate a perfectly prepared meal. Definitely one of the biggest draws of The Louis' location is its proximity to some of the District's, probably even the country's, best restaurants. Whether you want to tackle some of the area's best restaurants all in one day, or over time, if you live at The Louis, you need to experience these restaurants' cuisine:

Le Diplomate | 1601 14th St., NW
Step into Le Diplomate and you will feel like you have entered a Parisian bistro. The sidewalk cafe is a beautiful setting in which to sip a cappuccino and read the newspaper in the morning. Their extensive cocktail menu offers drinks you won't typically find anywhere else in Washington DC, including the Il Fait Beau, which combines Edinburgh gin, Elderflower-peach Shrub, and fresh lemon.

Visit Le Diplomate for BRUNCH.

Tico DC | 1926 14th St., NW
It's easy to begin your food tour at Tico DC, located just downstairs! Tico's Chef Michael Schlow has been featured on The Today Show, Top Chef Masters and other national television shows, in addition to being named "Best Chef in the Northeast" by the James Beard Foundation. Tico's American-based cuisine has elements of Spanish, Mexican and South American cuisines, too.

Visit Tico DC for DRINKS. Their menu features more than 140 types of tequila!

Lupo Verde | 14th & T Streets
Rustic Italian, in both decor and menu, describes Lupo Verde perfectly. The cheese and salumi menu offers allows you to mix and match the perfect charcuterie plate. All of Lupo Verde's cheeses are imported from Italy, so you know they have to be good!

Visit Lupo Verde for CHARCUTERIE.

Vinoteca | 1940 11th St., NW
The food served at Vinoteca's Happy Hour will probably be the most sophisticated happy hour selection you have ever seen! Choices include Barbecue Duck Roll, Chilled Pea Soup, and Charcuterie, just to name a few. If you would like to broaden your knowledge of wines, Vinoteca frequently offers Tuesday night classes in its upstairs lounge.

Visit Vinoteca for HAPPY HOUR.

Kapnos | 2201 14th St., NW
While Kapnos may be a younger restaurant, it opened in July 2013, it certainly has made quite an impact since then. The restaurant, a concept by Chef Mike Isabella, has two wood-fire grills with spits, and serves both classic and contemporary Greek dishes. Main courses include Moussaka, Kapama and Soutzoukakia, among many others.

Visit Kapnos for DINNER.

While there are dozens of delicious restaurants in our immediate area, there are a few key highlights that any U Street resident needs to try! If you have some free time over the weekend, pay one of these eateries a visit!

Furnish Your Home at The Louis

Once you have signed the lease and start packing the moving boxes to move into The Louis, then comes the fun task of...shopping! How do you want to decorate your new space? What vibe do you want it to have? Luckily, in the 14th & U area, there are many home furnishing stores to find beautiful new pieces of furniture and other decor items for your new apartment home. If you are unsure where to begin, here are some of our favorites:

Home Rule | 1807 14th St. NW
If you share the philosophy that you can never own too many kitchen gadgets, then Home Rule is going to be your new best friend! USA ice cube tray? Check. Contoured ice cream scoops for the perfect scoop? Check. Do you need these things? Maybe not, but you'll buy them anyway. Home Rule is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5:30 p.m.

Room & Board | 14th & T St.
It's pretty easy to spend hours upon hours inside Room & Board. Located in a restored Ford Motors showroom, there are 4 floors to explore. If you're in search of a new sofa, Room & Board offers an extensive selection of fabrics. Many of the pieces you'll find at Room & Board are made in America! Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Salt & Sundry | 1401 S St.
If you have more of a boho decor affinity, you will find plenty of pieces to complete your rooms at Salt & Sundry. While the store offers tables, most of their decor consists of accent/complementary pieces of furniture, including bar carts and fixings to go on it, candles, throws and more. Visit the store Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

West Elm | 1728 14th St., NW

If none of these stores have quite the pieces you're looking for, consider checking out the District Flea, which is held on Saturdays through October! National Ice Cream Month

Summers in Washington DC can be sizzling, and there is no better way to cool off during your commute to and from work than stopping for a good old ice cream cone! July marks National Ice Cream Month, with National Ice Cream Day on July 19, so now is the perfect opportunity to share some of our favorite DC-area ice cream shoppes with our residents!

Pitango Gelato
If you're in search of some "exotic" gelato flavors, Pitango Gelato is where you want to be. With flavors ranging from spicy chocolate to mojito, Pitango has a flavor to satisfy any craving. Pitango prides itself on sourcing the best ingredients, which include organic grass-fed milk, free-range eggs, and no artificial ingredients. With sophisticated flavors and organic ingredients come a higher price, but the uniqueness of their flavors is worth it. Pitango Gelato has several locations throughout DC, but the closest to your home at The Louis is in Logan Circle at 1451 P St. NW.

Dolcezza Gelato
Also located in Logan Circle is Dolcezza Gelato. After its owners created the concept in Buenos Aires in 2000, the first DC shop opened in Georgetown in July 2004. Dolcezza's gelato is made fresh daily at its Union Market location, and uses local ingredients. Visitors may even set up a tour of the gelato factory! Visitors can sample flavors like marscapone & berries and Georgia butter pecan in gelato, and sorbetto flavors like strawberry terragon.

Ice Cream Jubilee
Rated the top ice cream shop in the 2015 Washington City Paper Best of D.C. Readers Poll, Ice Cream Jubilee certainly does not disappoint. Current flavors include banana bourbon caramel, mango habanero and Thai iced tea! The Thai iced tea comes highly recommended for those who don't typically like to stray from vanilla. Jubilee's ice cream is made from 18% butterfat, which makes for a creamier ice cream. The majority of Jubilee's flavors are gluten-free, too. You may visit Ice Cream Jubilee in Navy Yard at 301 Water St. SE.

DC Yoga Week will culminate on Saturday, May 9 with Yoga on the Mall. The event takes places from 11 AM through 1 PM at the Sylvan Theater Stage. This will be an all-levels practice, complete with warmups and music! Be sure to bring a mat, towel, sunscreen and plenty of water to say hydrated and safe throughout your practice on the National Mall! While the forecast says partly cloudy, you could still get sunburned, and the high temperature is projected to be 85 degrees. To get to the National Mall from The Louis at 14 apartment homes, take the Green or Yellow Line Metro to the Archives stop. It's about a 10-minute ride. For complete details on Yoga on the Mall, click here. To view participating studios for donation-based or $5 classes, click here.

Trying Yoga for the First Time?
If you have never practiced yoga, here are some important facts to be aware of.

  • Stay hydrated - Whether you're doing heated yoga or not, it's important to stay hydrated so you don't pass out or cramp.
  • Don't push too hard - If you've never done yoga before, it's likely you won't be as flexible as some of your classmates and that's okay! As you go through the poses, you'll gradually increase your flexibility. If a pose is too much, as your instructor for a modification.
  • Introduce yourself - Before class begins and after it ends, you don't have to be silent. Introduce yourself to your instructor and those around you!

Explore the Softer Side of Red Wine at Vinoteca

The Louis at 14 apartment homes are close to a number of Washington DC's finest restaurants, which is one of the reasons we love our location at 14th and U Streets. If you're looking for a night out on the town or a happy hour to stop at on your way home from work, there is always more than one option available to you.

One of our neighborhood favorites, Vinoteca, periodically hosts wine tasting events on Tuesdays. This coming Tuesday, April 21, you can experience "The Softer Side of Red Wine." The class will feature 5 to 6 new wines from New Zealand, France and the United States, accompanied by small bites. You don't need to be a "wino" to attend these classes! They're lead by local sommeliers and questions and conversation are encouraged throughout the class. If you love to drink red wine, this is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about it!

The tasting takes place from 7-9 PM in Vinoteca's upstairs lounge. Reservations for the event are required as the class is limited to 20 participants, and a 48-hour cancellation policy also applies. The class costs $45 plus tax. If you are interested in making a reservation for this event, click here.

Thrillist features this event on its list of "13 Things to do in DC this April," so why not give it a try if you're looking for a fun date night idea or a night out with your friends? The best part? Vinoteca is only a 5-minute walk away from The Louis at 14, so you don't have to worry about driving home or finding a taxi!

If you are unable to attend this tasting, but are interested in future events at Vinoteca, you can view the full schedule on their website.

Have you previously attended a wine tasting at Vinoteca or another local restaurant? What did you think? Share your thoughts and comments with us! Cheers!

U Street Funk

U Street is known for Ben’s Chili Bowl, eclectic cultural spots and fun shopping. But on May 2, it will be known for one thing and one thing only - funk! After receiving approval from the city on April 3, the Funk Parade will officially return! The day long festival is parts parade, street fair and music festival.

The day includes a fair from noon- 5 PM followed by the parade from 5-7 PM and culminates with the music festival from 7-10 PM! The parade route will run from Howard Theatre to Lincoln Theater and will shut down the U Street corridor for the day. Last year, the first year of the event, drew 25,000 visitors to U Street. While local officials were very supportive of a second year, a response from the city took longer to receive. From WAMU:

(Mayor) Bowser spokesman Michael Czin told Bandwidth in January that Funk Parade was on the mayor’s radar, but it needed to work its way through the “normal process” of approving street closures. “We are a pro-funk administration,” Czin said.

The Funk Parade was started by Justin Rood and Chris Naoum, who share a mutual love for community, music and U Street. If you are interested in volunteer opportunities with the parade, fill out this form. If you would like to contribute to the parade, you can donate to their Indiegogo campaign.

The Louis at 14 apartment homes are just a 4-minute walk away from the Lincoln Theatre. Our rooftop offers an excellent bird’s-eye view of the parade route! Invite your friends over to enjoy the parade then head downstairs to enjoy the live music on the street!

Will you be joining in on the U Street Funk Parade? Hope to see you there! It’s going to be an exciting day to be on U Street!
